How have your political views changed over time?

My political views have not changed much over time. The times and culture has changed over the decades. I have always voted Democrat. I consider myself liberal. The definition of liberal has changed and been degraded. I’m a liberal by 90s-00s standards. Liberals should have never let Republicans and so called conservatives define them. I believe in the Bible. I don’t think that necessarily makes a person conservative in the current political sense.

I have my personal beliefs and opinions and everyone else has theirs. If no one is harming anyone all beliefs should be respected. The problem with the average American is that they want to be in everyone else’s business. Most Americans are seeking validation from others for their beliefs instead of standing on them. Americans have a herd mentality. The rights and freedoms that America’s founding documents guarantee should be respected.

Leaders should apply wisdom, expertise, experience, emotional intelligence and education when making decisions and creating policy. The well being of the environment and most vulnerable people in society should be prioritized. Prioritizing the powerful because “Trickle Down Economics” is a scam and a lie. I recognized that during the Reagan Administration. I was in elementary school at the time.

Of course I was influenced by my parents who were both union laborers. One grew up in the segregated south in a sharecropping family. The other grew up in the unofficially segregated north. My father had a far more comfortable upbring than my mother. His parents were factory workers that left the south in the great migration. My parents and grand parents were (are) politically right about everything. We live off of wages not profit. If I had a loss in wages my mother and I would be living under a bridge in a matter of months. That’s the distinction. That’s why I have never considered the Republican party as a viable option for political leadership.

The way politicians support billionaires and big businesses is outrageous. Politicians always manage to find money for real estate developers to build shopping malls and stadiums. The same politicians tell poor people to make money and support their own needs. Democrats are guilty of kissing up to real estate developers too but at least they are not solidly against social programs to support education, health and those in need. A civil society prioritizes the well being and interests of those that are disenfranchised and disadvantaged. The wealthy don’t need any help. I’ve held that belief since I was a child in elementary school in the 80s. Call it what you will.
