Fall Movie Review: Girlhood
Girlhood is a 2014 coming of age French film that I would compare to Boyz N the Hood. Instead of a story of teenaged boys in LA in the 90s it’s about a group of girls in a suburb of Paris in the mid 00s. Girlhood also reminds me of the movie Kids because these girls are all over Paris all day with no adult supervision or interaction doing whatever they want like the youngsters in Kids roamed around New York City doing as they pleased. The film is in French with English subtitles. The film is worthwhile for the right viewer.

Girlhood features a character named Vic. Vic lives with her family in an apartment near Paris. She lives with her mother who works as a hotel maid, a nerdowell older brother and two little sisters. Vic is not a good student so her career prospects are limited and her future is questionable.

Vic befriends a group of girls after storming out of a disappointing meeting with her school guidance counselor. The girls are naughty and mischievous. They are snarky, shoplift and get into street fights. They also have a youthful, feminine energy that makes them likeable.
Girlhood covers a lot of ground and the girls are good actresses. They all carry the film well. Girlhood touches on matters of friendship, femininity, race, gender, sex, opportunity and economics. I enjoyed the film.

Question of the Day 11.25.24 π π€¨
Name your top three pet peeves.
I really only have one general pet peeve. The rest of my pet peeves are very specific to situations and individuals. People that get in an elevator before letting people already in the elevator out.

Tyson vs. Paul: Horrible Idea
I don’t follow boxing but I know there was a big match last week. The fight was between internet personality and boxer Jake Paul and legendary boxer Mike Tyson. This boxing match should have never happened and it shows how much common sense, respect and boundaries are lacking in American society. This is yet another event that puts America’s racism on full display.
Mike Tyson is fifty eight years old. He was born in 1966. Jake Paul is twenty seven and was born in 1997. I don’t know why people are acting like this match is normal. High profile sporting events feature opponents in their prime. Jake Paul is a young man in his prime and Mike Tyson is eligible for senior citizen discounts. Jake Paul was born when Mike Tyson was in his prime.

This fight was highly disrespectful and took advantage of a vulnerable person. Tyson says he wants to fight again but Tyson wasn’t playing with a full deck from the start. He should have never been allowed to sign a contract for that fight. He shouldn’t have even been asked. Paul was declared the winner of this fight so it was good for his career. There are no official reports or how much money was made from the fight but this article shares that it is rumored that Paul made 40M, Tyson made 20M and 60M households watched the boxing match on Netflix. A lot of money was made from elder abuse and the elder made the least amount of money.
Paul nor Tyson have any pride. Paul should want to fight other men in their prime. Tyson shouldn’t have degraded himself with such nonsense. He’s a boxing legend and he has nothing else to prove. He should have been at a diner enjoying his senior discount.
Furthermore, the Paul vs. Tyson fight was racist. Imagine a young Black man in his prime fighting a White man that is nearly sixty and being put on a pedestal and declared the winner. This fight was organized to make a young White man a boxing star by giving him an advantage.
This high profile fight was an example of taking advantage of a person with cognitive, personal and intellectual problems and elder abuse. Netflix, Jake Paul and everyone that watched that fight should be ashamed of themselves. Once again I’m embarrassed and disturbed by American culture.
