I listened to “The House of Hidden Meanings: A Memoir by Rupaul. I’m a long time fan of Rupaul. He’s charming, energetic, smart and a great performer. I enjoy his humor to a point. I always thought his personality would be great on something like “Good Morning America” or “Today”. This is the second autobiography of Rupaul. “The House of Hidden Meanings: A Memoir” was released in 2024.
Rupaul came of age in the 70s and 80s. I always enjoy listening to people that were young during that time. It doesn’t seem that there was a lot of financial pressure on young people then. There weren’t demanding expectations to pursue education or a particular career path. It also seems that there was a lot more freedom and there were fewer fears.
Rupaul grew up in San Diego, California with his parents who split up during his childhood and his two sisters. He dropped out of school and moved to Atlanta, GA. He later moved to New York City to pursue an entertainment career. Rupaul spent his young years taking road trips with friends, doing drugs and couch surfing.
Rupaul doesn’t specifically discuss his career in this book. There is no mention of the talk show he had in the 90s, “Drag Race” or his recording “Supermodel”. This book talks about his family, friends, his significant other and his personal growth.
I liked the book because I’ve followed Rupaul’s career for a long time. This book may be boring to some people. It’s introspective. Listen, it’s Rupaul so there are parts of the book that will make some people clutch their pearls. I think it’s still worth listening to or reading. There is probably something in this story that anyone can relate to, understand and enjoy.
