What’s a movie you expected to hate but ended up loving?
I have three.
Norbit
I remember this being in theaters and I wasn’t interested in seeing it. Norbit seemed like a movie that based all it’s comedy on fat jokes, negative stereotypes of Black women and a man’s resentment of his marriage.
I may have been correct. I probably was but Norbit was funny. I don’t really remember what happened in this movie. It was long ago and I don’t think the movie was very deep. I watched Norbit on TV and I remember cracking up and being impressed with the special effects. I was glad I gave it a chance.

Talladega Nights

I had no interest in Talladega Nights when it was released. It wasn’t my cup of tea at all. At the time I was dating a guy and he wanted to see this movie so we went to see it at the theater. I thought Talladega Nights a hoot. The scene with the Frenchman speeding around the race track while sipping champagne and reading a book cracked me up.
You would be surprised at how often I have silently referenced this movie in my mind over the years. In my mind all twins are named Walker and Texas Ranger. When I see a child get reprimanded by a grand parent I’m reminded of “Granny Law”. When I see working class men with attractive daughters I think of the quote “What have you ever done in your life other than have a hot daughter?” Talladega Nights is full of little gems that have been invading my consciousness for years.
White Chicks

I thought the concept of White Chicks was the dumbest thing possible. I thought Hollywood had run out of ideas because WHAT!? I bypassed it in theaters but watched it on TV one afternoon and enjoyed it. It’s humorous and became an early 00s classic.
