There is tension in Black social media chats right now because of the song “Spend Dat” by rapper and City Girl Yung Miami. The song is about stealing and running scams. “Neo Soul singer” criticized “Spend Dat” on social media. Yung Miami’s supporters are defending her on social media and complaining about India Arie. They are calling India a hater and some are making very nasty remarks.

This type of thing flares up in Black social media spaces ever so often. Someone makes a statement that might be considered straight and narrow and then people come out of the wood work to argue with them about it even though it’s just common sense. Even if it’s not their personal opinion they should be able to understand the other person’s position.

India Arie is correct about what she said. Yung Miami rap about whatever she chooses but it’s irresponsible for BET to promote this music on a mainstream TV show. It’s also irresponsible for a song about grand larceny to be played at children’s events.

There should be no argument here but Luke or 2 Live Crew, Trick Daddy and legions of City Girls fans are upset with India Arie even though the other half of the City Girls spent time in a federal detention center for pulling scams.

These disagreements defy logic, decency and common sense. I’m disappointed as well. People need Jesus.
