  • Winter 2024 Review: Purpose Doesn’t Pause

    I listened to “Purpose Doesn’t Pause” by Christian social media influencer Hope Reagan Harris. I will say that this book had a good message for me personally at this time in my life. I’m sure the message may be meaningful for others as well.

    This book reminds me of “Girl Wash Your Face”. Both books have the same target audience. I found Rachel Hollis, the author of GWYF to be a bit hard to relate to as is Hope. However, Hope does a much better job of sharing a Biblical message. She quotes a lot of scripture in her book. I would recommend this book even though Hope is a young product in the Christian American Industrial Complex and something about her seems like she would be a part of an MLM company.

  • Winter 2024 Review: The Mother of Black Hollywood

    “The Mother of Black Hollywood” is written by actress Jenifer Lewis. I recommend experiencing this book on audio book because Ms. Lewis does a great job narrating her story. I enjoyed listening to “The Mother of Black Hollywood”. Jenifer is hilarious. She talks about her life candidly and she’s as objective as a person can be while talking about themselves. Ms. Lewis discusses her flaws and qualities equally. She seems to be forgiving to people that mistreated and betrayed her in the past. She doesn’t discuss them with malice. She is very matter of fact.

    I think that this could be a great choice for a book club. Ms. Lewis’ book touches on socio economic matter, Black history, show business, spirituality, therapy and healing. She’s also a hoot.

  • Winter 2024 Book Review: Karma

    I recently listened to “Karma” the biography of 80s pop star Boy George on audiobook. It was OK. If you are a fan of 80s pop or Boy George you may enjoy his book. “Karma” may also be valuable to those interested in LGBT matters but that’s not the focus of the book.

    Boy George told a lot of stories about being a part of a community of edgy artists in London in the late 70s and early 80s. He also discusses his impressions of various celebrities he’s met and his perspective on fame. A humorous anecdote from his book is having fellow inmates repeatedly sing the chorus of “Karma Chameleon” to him while he was incarcerated on a drug charge. Could you imagine?

    I enjoyed the book but it may not be for everyone.

    I enjoy working. I’ve never had a job where the job itself was the problem. You pretty much understand the role and responsibilities at the point of application so I don’t know why any job should be a problem. I’ve held some undesirable roles such as retail and food service but found fulfillment in them and see them as valuable experience.

    The things I don’t enjoy about being a part of the work force is I don’t like dealing with people’s ego, biases and work place politics. I also wish we could get away from the forty hour full time work week.

    I won’t go into depth about my current position. Neither of us have time for that. Let’s just say it beats the streets so I’m grateful to be here but I’m looking forward to a more prosperous future.

    What advice would you give to your teenage self?

    Get out there, smile and introduce yourself.  Be confident and remember that the world is a big place.  Participate and don’t stay on the sidelines. (Within the boundaries of the law and morality.) You have what it takes.  Make the most of your youth.

    Write about your approach to budgeting.

    Do the math.  Put the numbers in front of you so you know what you have or don’t have.  Knowing the numbers is the first step to creating a plan.  Math is a great reality check.  ➗ ➖➕✖️🟰

    Pay your bills and pay your debts.💲🧾

    Buy groceries and fill up your gas tank when you get paid. 🛒⛽

    Save some money.  Sign up for your employer’s 401k program and/or set up a Roth IRA.  The younger you are the better. Have a savings account for out of the ordinary expenses.  Your near and far future self will appreciate it.  🏦

    Don’t be too frugal.  You need to enjoy the fruits of your labor and enjoy your life.  Live a little.  Treat yourself. 💃🏿

    Make as much money as possible within the boundaries of the law, morality and mental and physical health. 💰

    I pay tithes when I get paid.  This has helped me develop a healthy relationship with money and material things.  ✝️⛪

    What were your parents doing at your age?

    My mom was a divorced single mom working over time to get me through college.  My dad was a bachelor on the singles’ scene.  He was a hot commodity and had several girlfriends post divorce.
